A Daily Challenge

Most of us deal with this challenge on a daily basis. It’s one thing we could definitely do better, but it’s easier said than done. I am referring to the ability to focus.

Whether it's completing tasks, preparing a presentation, reading emails, or creating a weekly newsletter. Your attention will inevitably wander away. As soon as we sense our attention has shifted, we tell ourselves to remain focused. But what is focus?

Main 🥙

A Lost Skill

Focus is described as the ability to center our attention on just one thing. Pretty simple, right? You must, however, resist distractions from all directions while focusing on a single task. Not so easy!

Ignoring distractions is a skill. According to a neuroscientific study, distractions trigger the release of dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. And, as we all know, our brain loves dopamine. 😍

Unfortunately, after being distracted, it can take an average of 23 minutes to regain complete focus, which can result in a 40% decrease in overall productivity.

We may become distracted for a variety of reasons. For example:

Sometimes it's possible that you struggle more with decision-making than with focus. Because as soon as tasks become urgent, you usually decide to take action. I call it the deadline effect. 😉

This demonstrates your ability to choose whether or not to be focused. Nonetheless, how should we be able to focus in such a noisy, busy, and distracting world?

Top 7 Focus Hacks

Our world is filled with distractions, making it hard for many people to focus. Here are my top 7 hacks to help you gain focus more easily:

  • 🧘 Practice mindful meditation, breath work, or yoga nidra prior to focused work.

  • 🎶 Listen to 40 Hz binaural beats, white noises or pink noises to fall into a focused state (a real game changer for me!).

  • ⏱️ Set time blocks for your tasks (ideally 45 - 90 minutes per task).

  • 🧊 Try cryotherapy (for example, cold showers or ice baths) before your focus work.

  • 🖼️ Create a distraction-free environment (no digital technologies).

  • ☕️ Drink some caffeine (proven to improve focus if consumed in moderation).

  • 💤 Get enough sleep (the foundation of proper cognitive performance).

  • Bonus: 🕺 Take breaks (I usually dance for a little bit).

My tip: Begin with specific lifestyle improvements (sleep, nutrition, and hydration) before forcing yourself to adopt new work habits.

Dad Joke of the Week

Dad: Why did you fail your photography exam?

Son: I just couldn’t focus!

A Deep Question

What do you believe in that others might not?

A Friendly Reminder

Focus on improving yourself, not proving yourself.
