Can’t sleep?

Almost everyone is familiar with the seemingly inevitable sensation of being awake in the middle of the night, unable to fall asleep. 😫

Then, after hours of stressing out and rolling around in bed, you can finally sleep. But what exactly happens when we fall asleep, or, more precisely, if you enter a light sleep?

Main 🥙

Light Sleep

Light sleep is defined as the first two stages of NREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep. During NREM sleep, bodily functions slow down or cease entirely, allowing reparative and restorative processes to take control.

During the first sleep stage, your bodily functions start to slow down. You begin to doze off and may experience muscle twitches known as hypnic jerks. The initial stage usually lasts between one and five minutes⌚️

In the second stage, your heart rate, respiration, and muscular activity all slow down while your body temperature drops. You spend approximately half of the night in stage 2 sleep. 🌃

This stage of sleep is also distinguished by the appearance of two distinct types of brain activity 🧠 :

  1. Sleep spindles (essential for memory & learning and help block out external stimuli).

  2. K-complexes (help you maintain sleep and consolidate memories).

Light sleep allows your body to wind down and fall into deep sleep (stage 3). However, what if you are unable to fall asleep, or, more specifically, if you are unable to enter a light sleep? 😉

How to Fall Asleep

Many people are having issues falling asleep. Here are some tips and tricks to help you enter light sleep more easily:

  • 🏋️ Exercise regularly.

  • 🧘 Relax your mind.

  • 🕰️ Stick to a consistent sleep schedule.

  • 🛑 Avoid stimulants (caffeine, nicotine and alcohol).

  • 🖼️ Create a quiet, dark, cool and comfortable sleeping environment.

  • 💡 Have a daily wind-down routine (my fav!!!).

My tip: Do whatever works best for you. Try to use your bedroom for sleep and sex only. If you still can't fall asleep after twenty minutes, go to another room and go back to bed when you're tired.
