Dangers of Screen Time

The next time you commute, please take a moment to look around you. What do you see? Probably people silently hanging over their phones, showing no emotions at all. Is this what technology was designed to do for us?

Many of us are aware of the negative effects of prolonged screen time. However, most adults spend an average of 46 hours and 40 minutes (almost two days…) in front of screens per week. Given the amount of time we spend in front of displays, what effects does screen time have on our overall health?

Too much screen time will…

  • have a negative impact on your overall health and wellbeing.

  • increase the risk of anxiety, depression, and mental health issues.

  • disrupt your sleep. 😴 

  • lead to serious conditions like bad neck, shoulder, and back posture.

  • decrease cognitive performance. 🧠 

  • cause eye pain and headaches.

  • create an addictive behavior and sedentary lifestyle.

Excessive screen time is bad for adults and can be detrimental for children. Due to the fact that children are being exposed to this technology for the first time in human history, we are not sure what the long-term effects are going to look like.

How to Limit Screen Time

Digital devices are everywhere, whether we like it or not. Here are some tips and tricks to help you limit your screen time:

  • 📲 Turn off notifications.

  • ⏱️ Set time limits for your electronic devices and applications.

  • ☕️ Take breaks from screens every 30 minutes (set a timer).

  • 📆 Schedule screen-free times.

  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Spend more time with people.

  • 🚵 Do a digital detox!

My tip: Being aware of your screen time is already a step in the right direction. If you feel that you spend too much time in front of devices, try not to be too hard on yourself. Try cutting back on your screen time over time. Step by step.
